Up to 80 people, including a baby, have been recovered in the English Channel today as the total number of migrants reaching UK shores approaches 15,000.

Photos taken in Dover, Kent on Friday showed border force officials marshalling dozens of migrants out of boats and inside for treatment.

Eyewitnesses estimate that “at least 80” migrants have been brought to Dover Marine, Kent, so far on Friday. The Interior Ministry has been contacted for comment.

If confirmed, that would take the total number of migrants to have reached the UK so far this year beyond the 15,000 mark.

It comes as more than 200 migrants crossed the Channel in a small boat on the same day, Interior Minister Priti Patel received a tour of frontline operations in the ongoing crisis.

So far, a record number of migrants have crossed the Channel this year – with the number already close to double that recorded for the whole of 2020.

A total of 14,942 people made the dangerous crossing of the English Channel in 2021 according to official records from the Ministry of the Interior.

On Friday, more families, including a baby (pictured), were intercepted by officials from border forces crossing the Channel.

It happened the same day Ms Patel, who says she will prioritize “tackling illegal immigration” after retaining her role in the cabinet reshuffle, visited Dover dressed in a camel jacket, d ‘a blue dress and sunglasses in the hot sun.

She could be seen taking a guided tour of Dover Marina by border force officers who showed her around their Eagle cutter moored in the harbor.

French authorities also said they intercepted 95 people in two incidents on Thursday.

It comes after 85 migrants crossed the English Channel on Wednesday aboard four boats, as the French prevented 162 people from making the dangerous journey in five incidents.

And the Border Force intercepted 11 migrants in a single boat on Tuesday.

It takes the total number to arrive in September at 2,515 out of 90 boats.

The total so far this year stands at 14,942, according to official figures from the Interior Ministry.

Dan O’Mahoney, Clandestine Channel Threat Commander, said today: “This unacceptable increase in the number of dangerous crossings is due to criminal gangs and an increase in illegal migration across Europe.”

“We are determined to target criminals at all levels, so far we have secured nearly 300 arrests, 65 convictions and prevented over 12,000 attempted migrants.

“But there is more to do.

“The government’s new immigration plan is the only credible way to fix the failing asylum system, break the business model of criminal gangs, and welcome people through safe and legal channels.”
