Ann Arbor, Mich. (AP) Ronnie Bell hosted a 76-yard touchdown reception and returned a 31-yard punt before being injured in a 47-14 win over Western Michigan on Saturday.
Wolverine (1-0) won the match easily, but may have lost the top player for some time.
Bell was injured on a punt return in the second quarter and lost weight in his right leg as he was helped off the field by his teammates and staff. The senior receiver was then transported off the field and climbed the tunnel to the team’s locker room for further evaluation.
The Broncos (0-1) got off to a good start, scoring a 7 in a 2-yard run from Ladarius Jefferson, trailing just 3 points from the first quarter, but failing to pull off either side of the ball. ..
Michigan scored 17 points in the second quarter, scoring Bell’s capture, Hassan Haskins’ 22-yard rush and Jake Moody’s 20-yard field goal.
With a 111-yard run, Blake Colm started scoring on the 14-yard reception, and his 30-yard touchdown run led Wolverine 40-7 early in the final quarter.
Cade McNamara, Michigan, completed 9 of 11 passes with 136 yards and two touchdowns. High-profile freshman JJ McCarthy slipped the bag on his fourth trip to Jackson State University graduate Dalen Baldwin with a 69-yard touchdown pass.
Kaleb Eleby had 20 yards for 37, 191 yards and a 27-yard touchdown pass to Corey Crooms with 3:30 left to play.
To take with
West Michigan: The Mid-American Conference team should be able to gain confidence from the way they started the game, but they can learn a lot from how Wolverine managed to pull away.
Michigan: Bell’s injury silenced a crowd of 109,295 and appeared to delay what would have been an enjoyable afternoon at the Big House.
West Michigan: On September 11, at home, Illinois will play the Division I College Football second tier program, known as the Championship Subdivision.
Michigan: Host No.20 Washington could be favored to win to give Jim Harbaugh a chance to improve his 0-11 record as a vulnerable Wolverines player on September 11.
