Thrash titans Anthrax will release their 40th anniversary live concert on a variety of formats

Anthrax is one of the “Big Four” of thrash metal, so there was a lot of celebration when the guys celebrated their 40th anniversary last year. Now, Anthrax will release “Anthrax XL,” their 40th anniversary live concert from last year, as both a live album and video album in digital, Blu-ray and CD formats on July 15.

The show took place on a Los Angeles soundstage and featured a set of hits and deep cuts from Anthrax’s extensive catalog. The release is part of Anthrax’s 40th anniversary celebration, which also includes an upcoming tour and the band’s 2021 web series.

The first rom single “Anthrax XL”, a live version of “Aftershock”, is available now. The aggressive track appears on the band’s 1985 “Spreading the Disease” record. Watch the video for “Aftershock” at the end of this story. To pre-order “Anthrax XL”, go here.

“Forty is not like 40,” Anthrax drummer Charlie Benante said in a statement. “Sometimes I have to remember how long this strange journey lasted. I love playing these songs – they’re such an important part of my life – and I know that for many of our fans, they’re an important part of theirs as well.

Lead singer Joey Belladonna added of the live recording, “Even though we were playing in a studio with just the crew there, we played this set like we were in front of 50,000 screaming fans. I felt like we made a complete connection with everyone watching from home or anywhere, and they connected with us.

In other news, Anthrax are gearing up for a North American tour with Black Label Society and Hatebreed this summer. Find tour dates via the band’s website.
